Allure and Peril

By

D. Edward Bowen

The eyes remain, those eyes I see.
The eyes of truth, the eyes of she.
The eyes I know, at once so rejecting,
Eyes so inspired, and yet so dejecting.

I see those eyes.
Fierce.
Piercing.
They stare at me from a field of white,
And hold such a pure, exotic insight.

I know those eyes.
Intelligent.
Cunning.
Always they herald the coming of pain,
Off’ring fallacious reprieve I attain.

“Confide in me.  Confide in me.”
A siren’s call to the weak.
“Confide in me.  Confide in me.”
Enticing words her sultry doth speak.

How many souls have those eyes acclaimed?
Thirsting to harvest her trophies of shame.
What secrets lie beyond her veiled walls?
Hidden away ‘til occasion calls.

The eyes remain.
Persuasive.
Enduring.
Their glint a promise of some sweet release,
A beauty belying their faux chains of peace.

The eyes of truth.
Rapturous.
Compelling.
Intimate sparks of acceptance and sympathy,
Fouled by intent of utter antipathy.

“Confide in me.  Confide in me.”
My heartbeat aquiver.
“Confide in me.  Confide in me.”
Her voice a fall taint, affecting a shiver.

What sort of creature hath borne such duplicity?
Allure that demands my solemn complicity.
How might I claim a superior venture?
Forsaking the cry spelling doom and debenture.

The eyes fall away.
Distant.
Relenting.
Curious, I wonder their sudden desertion,
Odd in the face of wanton assertion.

The eyes disappear.
Silent.
Desisting.
The blackness enshrouds their averse resign,
My own lids the cause of nefarious design.

“Confide in me.  Confide in me.”
Her still voice recalled.
“Confide in me.  Confide in me.”
Words long remembered, a risk to enthrall.

A part of me scourged from thwarting temptation,
Sagacious strength gleaned from grief’s lamentation,
Yet still the eyes haunt my visions of night,
Waking or sleeping, their gaze fills my sight.

The eyes remain, those eyes that I see.
The eyes of truth, the eyes of she.
The eyes I know, at once so rejecting,
Eyes so inspired, and yet so dejecting.
